What is a Core Charge?

A core charge (also called "core deposit") is similar to the deposit you might pay for a can or bottle of soda and is a standard requirement in the auto parts industry. For example, in many states, to promote recycling, you pay a deposit when you purchase a can of soda and receive your deposit back when you return the empty can. Many automotive parts have a core charge, or core price, that works in essentially the same way as a soda can deposit.

30 Day Core Charge Hold

You authorize Tamerx Diesel Products, to hold your credit card for the specified core charge amount and that you agree to return your core with 30 days of receiving the purchased part. When we have received your core return, the hold is released and the core charge payment is canceled.

The customer, or parts buyer, is responsible for any shipping costs associated with core returns unless otherwise specified in the product listing/detail page. Tamerx Diesel Products offers prepaid UPS shipping labels (SKU numbers UPS-CR1 and UPS-CR2) for use in returning your core that are available for purchase on our website during your shopping/order process.

The shipping label you will need to use for the core return is dependent upon what part you are purchasing. UPS-CR1 is good for cores weighing up to 20 pounds. UPS-CR2 is appropriate for shipping cores weighing 21 pounds or more. You must include enough information with the core return that clearly identifies it as a.) a Core Return, and b.) contains enough information we can use to clearly associate the core return with your order. Including a copy of the invoice or packing slip that came with the original shipment, clearly marked "Core Return", is ideal. Alternately, you can include a note marked as "Core Return" that includes your order number, full name and address, and phone number or other contact information. Failure to include this information with your returned core will most likely delay any due core credit being issued and/or delay any applicable warranty activation. Core returns need to be for the exact part purchased and cannot be damaged. Substituting another part in place of the part you have purchased is not acceptable.

All fluids must be drained.

If you have purchased a set or a parts package, you will need to return cores for all components of the set. For example, if you have purchaed a high pressure oil pump with an IPR valve, you will need to return both HPOP and IPR valve cores to receive proper credit. If you have purchased an EGR cooler/EGR valve package, your core return must consist of an EGR cooler core and an EGR valve core, or core credit will not be given.

Core Charges are often mandated by state legislature, and, as such, the actual core charge and taxes on the charge may vary depending on the state in which you buy your part. The Tamerx Diesel Products core charge presented to you online today with your item is representative of the most common core charge.

The Cummins ISB 6.7L Decomposition Reactor Tube 2008-2010: OEM 2871541 is an exhaust aftertreatment component designed to support the treatment and movement of exhaust gases in compatible Cummins ISB 6.7L diesel engines. It provides a passage where exhaust gases can flow under the temperature conditions needed for the intended emissions-control process.

In SCR-equipped applications, a decomposition reactor tube also helps prepare injected Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) for the chemical reactions needed to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Its specific function depends on the engine's aftertreatment configuration.

What Does the Decomposition Reactor Tube Do?

  • Directs exhaust gases through the system The tube provides a passage for exhaust gases to move toward downstream emissions-control components.
  • Supports exhaust treatment processes It helps maintain the intended exhaust pathway required for the aftertreatment system to operate correctly.
  • Supports DEF decomposition in applicable systems In SCR-equipped configurations, the tube provides space for injected DEF to break down under suitable exhaust temperature conditions.
  • Promotes proper exhaust mixing Where DEF injection is used, the tube helps the DEF mixture interact with hot exhaust gases before reaching the SCR catalyst.
  • Helps reduce excessive deposits Proper exhaust temperatures and fluid distribution can help minimize deposits that might otherwise restrict the tube.
  • Works with related aftertreatment components The tube operates within the exhaust system alongside the components responsible for emissions treatment and monitoring.
  • Supports proper exhaust flow A tube that remains free from damage and excessive restrictions helps exhaust gases travel through their intended pathway.
  • Helps maintain emissions-control operation Proper tube condition supports the exhaust treatment requirements of compatible Cummins ISB 6.7L applications.

An Important Part of the Exhaust Aftertreatment System

The Cummins ISB 6.7L Decomposition Reactor Tube (OEM 2871541) helps maintain the exhaust pathway needed for proper aftertreatment operation. If the tube becomes damaged, cracked, restricted, or affected by excessive deposits, it may contribute to exhaust leaks, abnormal exhaust conditions, emissions-related fault codes, or operating restrictions.

Inspecting exhaust connections, addressing unusual deposits, and following recommended maintenance procedures can help protect the decomposition reactor tube and support dependable exhaust treatment.

A Decomposition Reactor Tube is an important component of a diesel engine's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. It helps prepare injected Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) for the chemical reactions that reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Over time, DEF deposits, excessive exhaust temperatures, contamination, and mechanical damage can cause the tube to deteriorate or malfunction.

Here are several common causes of Decomposition Reactor Tube failure:

  • Excessive DEF crystallization DEF deposits can accumulate inside the tube when the fluid does not properly evaporate and decompose, potentially restricting exhaust flow.
  • Faulty DEF Doser Injector A leaking, clogged, or malfunctioning DEF injector can produce an incorrect spray pattern, allowing DEF to accumulate on the tube's internal surfaces.
  • Low exhaust temperatures Prolonged operation at insufficient exhaust temperatures can prevent proper DEF decomposition and contribute to deposit formation.
  • Excessive exhaust heat Abnormally high exhaust temperatures can damage the tube's internal components, weaken metal surfaces, or cause thermal distortion.
  • Contaminated DEF DEF containing dirt, oil, fuel, or other contaminants can interfere with normal decomposition and contribute to deposits or component damage.
  • Frequent short trips and extended idling Operating conditions that repeatedly prevent the exhaust system from reaching suitable temperatures can encourage DEF deposit accumulation.
  • Exhaust leaks Damaged gaskets, loose clamps, or cracked connections can affect exhaust conditions and contribute to improper aftertreatment operation.
  • Physical damage and vibration Road debris, excessive vibration, loose mounting hardware, or improper installation can cause cracks and other structural damage.
  • Corrosion and material deterioration Exposure to moisture, road chemicals, and repeated heating and cooling cycles can gradually weaken the tube and its connections.
  • Improper DEF dosing control Faulty temperature sensors, NOx sensors, or related control components may contribute to incorrect DEF dosing under certain operating conditions.

A failing Decomposition Reactor Tube does not always require immediate replacement. Minor DEF deposits may be removable through manufacturer-approved servicing, while severe blockages, cracks, internal damage, or excessive corrosion may require replacement.

Before replacing the tube, inspect the DEF Doser Injector, DEF quality, exhaust temperature sensors, and related SCR components. Correcting the underlying problem can help prevent repeated deposits and premature failure of the replacement Decomposition Reactor Tube.

The 2871541 provides an exhaust passage designed to support the mixing and decomposition processes required by its specific aftertreatment configuration.

Possible warning signs include exhaust leaks, unusual exhaust restrictions, visible cracks, damaged connections, and related aftertreatment fault codes.

Yes, excessive exhaust deposits or other internal obstructions can restrict gas flow through the 2871541.

Abnormal exhaust conditions, excessive soot, and contamination can contribute to deposit accumulation inside the 2871541.
