As is the case for the majority of the diesel products sold on Tamerx Diesel Products, your part's warranty is active as soon as you install it. In some other cases, warranty activation is contingent upon you sending us your core (i.e., your old part). Tamerx Diesel Products will provide you a return shipping label for parts that have a warranty with a core return condition. When we have received your core return, the part's warranty coverage begins. We reserve the right to void the product warranty if your core is not received within the allotted time, or if it isn't received at all. If the warranty for the diesel part you are purchasing has a core return requirement, it will be clearly noted on the product detail page/item listing.
What is a Core Charge?
A core charge (also called "core deposit") is similar to the deposit you might pay for a can or bottle of soda and is a standard requirement in the auto parts industry. For example, in many states, to promote recycling, you pay a deposit when you purchase a can of soda and receive your deposit back when you return the empty can. Many automotive parts have a core charge, or core price, that works in essentially the same way as a soda can deposit.
30 Day Core Charge Hold
You authorize Tamerx Diesel Products, to hold your credit card for the specified core charge amount and that you agree to return your core with 30 days of receiving the purchased part. When we have received your core return, the hold is released and the core charge payment is canceled.
The customer, or parts buyer, is responsible for any shipping costs associated with core returns unless otherwise specified in the product listing/detail page. Tamerx Diesel Products offers prepaid UPS shipping labels (SKU numbers UPS-CR1 and UPS-CR2) for use in returning your core that are available for purchase on our website during your shopping/order process.
The shipping label you will need to use for the core return is dependent upon what part you are purchasing. UPS-CR1 is good for cores weighing up to 20 pounds. UPS-CR2 is appropriate for shipping cores weighing 21 pounds or more. You must include enough information with the core return that clearly identifies it as a.) a Core Return, and b.) contains enough information we can use to clearly associate the core return with your order. Including a copy of the invoice or packing slip that came with the original shipment, clearly marked "Core Return", is ideal. Alternately, you can include a note marked as "Core Return" that includes your order number, full name and address, and phone number or other contact information. Failure to include this information with your returned core will most likely delay any due core credit being issued and/or delay any applicable warranty activation. Core returns need to be for the exact part purchased and cannot be damaged. Substituting another part in place of the part you have purchased is not acceptable.
All fluids must be drained.
If you have purchased a set or a parts package, you will need to return cores for all components of the set. For example, if you have purchaed a high pressure oil pump with an IPR valve, you will need to return both HPOP and IPR valve cores to receive proper credit. If you have purchased an EGR cooler/EGR valve package, your core return must consist of an EGR cooler core and an EGR valve core, or core credit will not be given.
Core Charges are often mandated by state legislature, and, as such, the actual core charge and taxes on the charge may vary depending on the state in which you buy your part. The Tamerx Diesel Products core charge presented to you online today with your item is representative of the most common core charge.
Forming an important passage within the exhaust aftertreatment system, the Cummins ISB 6.7L Decomposition Reactor Tube (2014–2017) OEM 5271589 helps prepare diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) for the SCR process. The Cummins ISB 6.7L Decomposition Reactor Tube (OEM 5271589) is an important part of the engine’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system. Its primary role is to provide the proper environment for injected Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to mix with hot exhaust gases and break down before reaching the SCR catalyst.
This process is critical because the SCR catalyst depends on properly prepared DEF to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions effectively.
Why Is the Decomposition Reactor Tube Important?
- Helps prepare DEF for the SCR process
- After DEF is injected into the exhaust, heat helps convert its urea content into ammonia needed for NOx reduction.
- Promotes proper DEF and exhaust mixing
- The tube provides space for DEF to distribute and mix with the exhaust stream before reaching the SCR catalyst.
- Supports NOx reduction
- Proper DEF decomposition allows ammonia to react with nitrogen oxides inside the SCR catalyst, converting them primarily into nitrogen and water vapor.
- Helps prevent DEF deposits
- Proper temperature, dosing, and mixing can reduce the likelihood of crystallized DEF accumulating within the exhaust system.
- Supports SCR catalyst operation
- The catalyst depends on correctly prepared DEF, making the decomposition tube an important step before the SCR reaction occurs.
- Contributes to emissions compliance
- Proper operation helps the complete aftertreatment system maintain the emissions levels expected from compatible Cummins ISB 6.7L applications.
The Cummins ISB 6.7L Decomposition Reactor Tube (OEM 5271589) acts as an important transition point between DEF injection and SCR catalyst treatment. If the tube becomes damaged, restricted, or heavily coated with deposits, DEF mixing and decomposition may be affected, potentially leading to SCR efficiency faults, emissions warnings, or other aftertreatment problems.
Keeping the DEF system properly maintained and addressing dosing or deposit-related issues early can help protect the decomposition reactor tube and support dependable operation of the entire SCR system.
A failing Decomposition Reactor Tube should be addressed promptly because it plays an important role in the SCR aftertreatment system. It provides the space needed for injected Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to mix with hot exhaust and form ammonia before reaching the SCR catalyst. Problems such as DEF deposits, exhaust leaks, or physical damage can interfere with this process.
If you suspect the tube is failing, focus on finding the cause of the problem before replacing parts.
Here are the steps you should take:
- Check for diagnostic trouble codes
- Scan the system for SCR, DEF dosing, NOx, and exhaust temperature-related codes that may help identify the source of the issue.
- Look for DEF crystallization
- White deposits inside or around the tube can indicate poor DEF atomization, leakage, or incorrect dosing.
- Inspect the DEF injector
- A clogged, leaking, or damaged injector can create an improper spray pattern and cause deposits to accumulate inside the reactor tube.
- Check for exhaust leaks
- Inspect clamps, gaskets, connections, and the tube itself for cracks or leaks that could interfere with exhaust flow.
- Inspect for physical or heat damage
- Severe corrosion, cracks, deformation, or signs of overheating may indicate that the tube needs replacement.
- Verify related sensors
- Faulty NOx or exhaust temperature sensors can contribute to SCR problems and should be tested before assuming the reactor tube itself has failed.
- Clean or replace the tube when appropriate
- Minor removable deposits may sometimes be addressed through proper servicing, but a cracked, severely restricted, corroded, or permanently damaged tube should generally be replaced.
Avoid ignoring a failing Decomposition Reactor Tube, as unresolved problems can contribute to SCR efficiency faults, DEF deposit buildup, and engine derates. Correcting the underlying DEF dosing, exhaust, or engine issue before installing a replacement can also help prevent the new tube from developing the same problem.
Visible DEF deposits, SCR-related fault codes, exhaust leaks, abnormal restriction, or physical damage can indicate that the 5271589 requires inspection.
Yes, excessive deposits inside the 5271589 can reduce the available exhaust passage and interfere with normal aftertreatment operation.
Technicians should inspect the 5271589 for cracks, dents, damaged mounting points, distorted connections, heat damage, and deteriorated sealing surfaces.
Inspecting the interior of the 5271589 can reveal excessive DEF deposits, contamination, or restriction that may not be visible from the outside.
